How to Make Your Own Resin Keycap: A Beginner's Guide

Making your own resin keycap is a deeply rewarding experience that combines artistry with a hands-on craft. While the process requires some practice and the right materials, it is entirely accessible to beginners who are willing to invest a little time and patience. Here is a comprehensive guide to get you started on your resin keycap journey.

First, you will need a silicone mold in the shape of your desired keycap profile. Pre-made molds are available online in popular profiles like SA, OEM, and Cherry. You will also need UV resin or two-part epoxy resin, resin pigments or alcohol inks for color, and any inclusions you want to embed, such as dried flowers, glitter, or small figurines.

The basic process involves mixing your resin according to the manufacturer’s instructions, adding your chosen pigments and inclusions, and carefully pouring the mixture into the mold. For UV resin, you will then cure it under a UV lamp for the specified time. For epoxy resin, you will need to wait 24 to 48 hours for it to fully cure at room temperature.

Once cured, the keycap is removed from the mold and sanded to remove any imperfections. Starting with a coarser grit sandpaper and progressively moving to finer grits will result in a smooth, polished surface. A final coat of UV resin or a dedicated resin polish can be applied to restore the glossy finish. With practice, you will be creating stunning, professional-quality artisan keycaps in no time.
